چکیده

A novel fully integrated CMOS LC tank VCO is presented. The LC tanks are implemented by exploiting the active circuit ‘boot-strapped inductor’ (BSI), which behaves like a high-quality factor inductor. Particularly, the LC tanks have been implemented by introducing a new version of the CMOS BSI circuit, which provides better versatility and design reliability. In order to verify the effectiveness of such an approach, a case study for 5–6GHz direct-conversion multi-standard WLAN transceivers is presented. The VCO has been designed in a 0.35 m standard CMOS technology. The new BSI exhibits a high-quality factor (higher than 25 over the all frequency range) and provides a high selectivity without introducing a relevant excess of noise, for a better spectral purity and a lower phase noise (PN) of the VCO. The overall VCO circuit consumes 9mW. The VCO produces an oscillation in the tuning range from 4.91 to 5.93GHz (nearly equal to 19%). The circuit exhibits a PN of −129dBc/Hz at 1MHz of frequency offset from the central frequency (5.4GHz) and a FOM equal to 189.5 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 194.1 dBc/Hz at 1MHz of frequency offset, respectively. Pll Based Frequency Synthesizer Implemented with an Active Inductor Oscillator

High costs, bulkiness, and larger power consumption makes transceiver integration and miniaturization a desired option to discretely implemented transceivers. Furthermore, a frequency synthesizer forms an important part of high-frequency transceivers. In this paper, the design of a fully-integrated dual loop frequency synthesizer is detailed. Previously, frequency synthesizers have already been...

Wide Tuning Range LC-VCO Using Variable Inductor for Reconfigurable RF Circuit

This paper presents a novel wide tuning range CMOS Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). VCO uses an on-chip variable inductor as an additional variable element to extend the tuning range of VCO. The fabricated variable inductor achieves the variable range of 35%. The VCO was fabricated using 0.35 μm standard CMOS process, and can be tuned continuously from 2.13 GHz to 3.28 GHz (tuning range of ...

A 5 GHz LC-VCO with Active Common Mode Feedback Circuit in Sub-micrometer CMOS Technology

A 1.2V 5GHz low-cost voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with active common mode feedback has been implemented in a CMOS/RF 90nm technology for a robust I/Q generation using a frequency divider-by-2 (DIV2). As the input common mode of the DIV2 affects critically its performance, a calibration method to correct the output common mode of the VCO has been proposed and validated through post-layout...

Quality Factor and Inductance in Differential IC Implementations

Voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) are critical components for signal generation and frequency selection in RF/microwave transceivers. Recently, there has been considerable interest in monolithic integration of inductance-capacitance (LC) tank oscillators for highly integrated RF transceivers [1]. Technologies such as Si complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) and Si/SiGe BiCMOS are o...

Large-Signal Analysis of MOS Varactors in CMOS Gm LC VCOs

MOS varactors are used extensively as tunable elements in the tank circuits of RF voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) based on submicrometer CMOS technologies. MOS varactor topologies include conventional D=S=B connected, inversion-mode (I-MOS), and accumulation-mode (A-MOS) structures. When incorporated into the VCO tank circuit, the large-signal swing of the VCO output oscillation modulates...
